Barred Owl

Cool Facts: The barred owl is a medium sized bird of prey whose name comes from the barring on its chest and belly. This nocturnal raptor prefers the dense foliage high up in the trees where it can sleep during the day. The perch and dive method is how they hunt for their favourite prey – the meadow vole. They also love shrews and deer mice but will eat other rodents, amphibians, fish, birds, and insects as well. Barred owls, sometimes called the ‘eight-hooter’, will vocalize year-round. Their courtship calls begin in February, when males hoot and the females answer back with their location. Hooting and screeching will continue with other mating displays until a partner is chosen.

Habitat: Barred owls live in moist coniferous and deciduous forests, streamside woodlands, and wooded swamps. In North America, they range in the eastern part of the U.S. and throughout Canada, extending west.

Threats: Habitat loss due to forest conversion, human persecution, and collisions with cars and hydro wires.
