Loon

Cool Facts: Loons are experts in the water with bodies designed for swimming and diving. To help them plunge, they have many solid bones, as opposed to hollow ones like other birds. Their large webbed feet help push them through the water and they can dive to a depth of 80 metres! Loons have complex and changing calls used in different combinations to communicate with other loons things such as greetings, annoyance, alarm signals, and regaining contact with a mate.

Habitat: Loons breed in the summer in freshwater lakes throughout North America, and winter mostly at sea.

Threats: Disturbances from boats and cottages, declining fish prey, water pollution and contamination, and aquatic garbage left by humans.
