African Lion
Cool Facts: Lions are the only social cats, living in family groups called prides. These prides are made up of several related females, their offspring and one or two mature males. The females do the bulk of the hunting, while the male’s role is to protect the pride. Lion prey includes numerous species, but their favourites are cape buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and other antelope. A lion’s famous roar is heard most often at night and can be heard up to five kilometres away!
Habitat: Lions live in savannas, scrub deserts and woodlands throughout sub-Saharan Africa, with a small population still existing in India.
Threats: Habitat conversion for agricultural use (farming), competition with farmers for land and prey, and trophy hunting.
