River Hippopotamus

Cool Facts: The river hippo is one of the largest land mammals, with an average adult weight of 1,825-kilograms! Hippos are well adapted to their life in the water; they can stay submerged for seven minutes at a time and their eyes, ears and nostrils are all on the tops of their heads to easily sense their surroundings while staying almost entirely under water. Although hippos have large canine tusks for displays, they are not predators and their diet is entirely made up of grasses. Due to their very sensitive skin, they only come out of the water after sunset to feed.

Habitat: Hippos live in rivers and lakes throughout sub-Saharan Africa.

Threats: Poaching for their ivory tusks and trophy hunting for their skulls.
